Attendees at the Albuquerque and Hartford symposiums received the Handout Book at the Registration Desk. This year, the AAW has made planning easier by providing a printer-friendly "Symposium Planning Guide" in advance so attendees can become familiar with the rotations and plan their time BEFORE they arrive.

June 17 update

Well, things seem to have quieted, so I revised the ABSTRACTS section of the Planning Guide to reflect the updates on this page. Use the links below to download the latest version.

June 15 update

Giles Gilson is unable to attend, and his rotations have been cancelled with no replacement.

June 14 updates

Dixie Biggs is unable to attend, and her rotations have been replaced by Trent Bosch and J. Paul Fennell.

  • Friday, 2p (Room 10) Trent Bosch
Sunburst Platter. Trent will turn a platter from green wood, start to finish, and then carve a sunburst pattern into the rim.  He will discuss drying techniques, getting the cleanest cut possible to minimize sanding, how to develop new ideas, and more.  Learn everything you need to know to turn your own Sunburst Platter and gain a better understanding of the creative process.
  • Friday, 3:50p (Room 10) Trent Bosch
Vessels of Illusion. Participants will learn all the techniques Trent goes through in the creation of this body of work and how & why he developed it.  This demonstration will include turning the outer hollow form, carving the vessel, turning the insert, using wood bending to get the insert in the outer vessel, and principles of wood bending for woodturners.  Participants will gain a lot of good solid technical information about turning, carving, wood bending, and how to realize their own ideas and where to look for inspiration.
  • Saturday, 8a (Room 10) J. Paul Fennell
Turning Hollow Forms with Homemade Tools. The main focus of this rotation is (1) turning elegant hollow forms with a clear emphasis on form, and (2) learning how subtle changes during the turning process can dramatically change the final look of the vessel.  The outside shape will be done with traditional gouges and scrapers, but for the hollowing process, J. Paul will use tools that he made—from boring bars and hook tools with unique handles, to special calipers to measure wall thickness.  The demonstration will include how these tools are readily made and how they are used to create gallery-quality vessels.
  • Saturday, 10:30a (Room 10) J. Paul Fennell
Embellishment Techniques to Spark your Creativity. The creative use of design elements for embellishing turned forms will make your work personal and unique.  This demonstration will explore many of the techniques that established turners have in their “toolbox,” from carving, piercing, and texturing methods to unique ways to lay out, index, and transfer designs onto 3-dimensional surfaces.  Each technique will be described in detail and shown how singularly or in combination they can change a basic vessel into a special expressive, personal piece.

June 12 updates

Pascal Oudet is unable to attend, and his rotations have been replaced by David Nittmann:

  • Friday, 9:10a (Room 11) David Nittmann
Friday, 2:00p (Room 8) David Nittmann

Complete Color Control. Ten terms for a clear understanding of the use of color in your work. Color theory made simple, with an emphasis on the "intent" of the artist presenting the work.
  • Friday, 11a (Room 11) David Nittmann
Airbrush Embellishments 1. Idea shop #1 for the application of color in your work. Project example will give inspiration to artists intereted in using the airbrush to create embellishments on wood art. Color matching explained in detail for realistic images.
  • Saturday, 8a (Room 11) David Nittmann
Airbrush Embellishments 2. Idea shop #2 for the application of color in your work. More examples of possibilities using the airbrush to embellish art work, on and off the lathe.

Some of Ray Key's (Ballroom D) demonstrations have been retitled (Rotations 2 & 9).
